It's been quite a while since the last update, but finally some progress
has been made on our 68 'vette restoration project.
The body work has finally begun. The old rusty body mounts and header
bar have been replaced with brand new reproduction parts, and the
deteriorated fiberglass in those areas has been repaired. (See photos.)
Originally, the header bar was riveted to the bonding strip using aluminum
rivets. Over time, the deterioration of these rivets causes the fiberglass
above to 'bubble'.
To avoid this problem, we used a structural adhesive in place
of the rivets. Such a modern adhesive actually provides a stronger bond
and will help keep the restoration looking good for a long time to come.
We will continue to prep the body for paint.
We're off to a good start, but a lot of work still remains.
